Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is a vital option to address severe coronary heart disease. However, this life-saving surgery can impose a significant financial burden to patients and their families.

In the Philippines, access to affordable CABG surgery has been a critical concern given the high costs associated with advanced cardiac care.

Recent developments in the country have provided new avenues for accessible treatment options through partnerships like the one between Capitol Medical Center (CMC) and PhilHealth.

Capitol Medical Center: PhilHealth-Accredited Facility for PhilHealth Z-Benefit Package for CABG

In a significant development for cardiac care in the Philippines, CMC has partnered with PhilHealth to offer the Z-Benefit Package for CABG procedures. Dr. Arsenio D. Alcantara, Benefit Administration Section Head at PhilHealth, highlights CMC’s commitment to providing accessible and high-quality healthcare:

“Capitol Medical Center has been at the forefront of providing quality healthcare affordable to Filipinos. PhilHealth and CMC have been partners for decades already, and with the quality services given by Capitol Medical Center, this have driven us to collaborate with them for the provision of the Z-Benefit package for coronary artery bypass graft procedures.”

CMC’s Capability in Advanced Cardiac Procedures

CMC lauds a strong track record in performing advanced cardiac procedures such as CABG, consistently achieving high success rates and patient satisfaction.

Victoria Lorelie Tan, President of CMC, highlights the hospital’s CABG expertise. “Since 2017, CMC has been performing CABG procedures. Despite challenges like the pandemic, we have maintained high success rates and handled complicated cases.”
Improving Accessibility and Affordability

CMC is dedicated to making cardiac surgeries accessible and affordable for all patients. Even those with financial means often face challenges in covering the full cost of a CABG procedure. As Dr. Atabug points out “Even our paying patients, at times, would refuse having CABG because they may have the funding, but kung minsan kulang.”

CMC is committed to bridging this gap and ensuring that life-saving treatments are available to everyone who needs them.

PhilHealth Partnership and Accreditation

CMC’s accreditation as the 11th facility in the National Capital Region to offer PhilHealth’s Z-Benefit for CABG underscores its commitment to expanding access to critical cardiac procedures. Twenty-eight facilities are now accredited by PhilHealth nationwide for this comprehensive healthcare benefit.

Capitol Medical Center’s collaboration with PhilHealth to offer the Z-Benefit Package for CABG represents a significant stride towards accessible and high-quality cardiac care in the Philippines. With a focus on affordability, expertise in advanced cardiac procedures, and accreditation by PhilHealth, Capitol Medical Center is prepared to serve patients seeking effective treatment options for severe coronary heart disease.
How to avail?

To qualify for the PhilHealth Z-Benefit package for CABG, “patients must be 19 years old or older and have a stable coronary artery disease. This means they should not be experiencing severe angina or heart failure,” said Dr. Mario Victor M. Villardo, Training Officer, Section of Cardiology, and Team Lead for the Z-Benefit Package for CABG at CMC.

While these are the basic requirements, Dr. Villardo emphasizes that additional eligibility criteria have to be discussed with the patient before attaining or getting the Z Benefit package.
