Department of Radiology – Diagnostics and Therapeutics

The Department of Radiology offers diagnostic and therapeutic procedures dedicated to delivering high-quality imaging to aid physicians and patients with their health care needs. With the use of advanced technology and imaging techniques, our radiologists can provide excellent imaging related services for Capitol Medical Center’s physicians and patients.

The Department of Radiology has been in existence since the establishment of Capitol Medical Center. It is equipped with digital and high-level technology imaging machines. From its inception, it has evolved into a multi-specialty department with accredited residency and fellowship training programs. The Radiology consultants are accredited active fellows of the Philippine College of Radiology and its specialties, and are trained in varying subspecialties. Our Radiologic Technologists and Nurses are certified and highly experienced. They work together in a professional manner to offer quality healthcare.

The Department of Radiology is comprised of multiple sections offering various specialty modalities: Diagnostic Imaging Section (X-ray), Computed Tomography (64-slice and 128-slice CT scans) & Magnetic Resonance Imaging (1.5 Tesla) – CT-MRI Section, Ultrasound Section (UTZ), Breast Care Center (BCC), and Interventional Radiology Section (IR).

The Department of Radiology offers the following multimodality diagnostic and therapeutic imaging:

  • Diagnostic Radiography
This imaging technique utilizes X-rays, a type of radiation that is used to produce radiographic images of the body. This is the most requested type of diagnostic imaging.
  • Ultrasound
An ultrasound (UTZ) scan uses high-frequency sound waves to capture live images from the inside of your body. An ultrasound allows your doctor to evaluate various organs, vessels, and tissues without needing to make an incision. Ultrasound does not use radiation.
  • Computed Tomography
Computed tomography (CT scan) uses a series of high X-ray images that create a sequence of cross-sectional images of the body. This is often used when a doctor needs detailed images for further assessment of a body part of concern. The department has 64-slice and 128-slice CT machines.
  • Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses magnetic fields and radio waves to obtain superior and detailed images of the body that helps identify and adequately characterize diseases. The department utilizes a 1.5 Tesla MRI, it does not use radiation.
  • Vascular Imaging
Vascular Imaging is an essential method to evaluate the body’s circulatory system, this aides in identifying narrowing, stenosis, or blockages in the arteries and veins. Vascular imaging can be obtained via Doppler ultrasound study or contrast or non-contrast enhanced angiography from CT-MRI or interventional procedures. Various modalities are available for vascular imaging.
  • Mammography
Mammography uses low-dose X-rays for breast imaging and is utilized for screening of nodules, both benign and malignant. It is a central part in the early detection of breast cancers.
  • Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology uses imaging technology to help guide diagnostic and therapeutic medical procedures.
The Department of Radiology offers system based diagnostic and therapeutic imaging services. These are:
Ultrasound Section:

The Ultrasound Section is offering a wide range of diagnostic ultrasound examinations using top-of- the-line machines that deliver outstanding diagnostic confidence.

Virtually all parts of the body may be examined using
the systems, including the neonatal brain, carotids, abdominal or peripheral blood vessels, thyroid gland, breast, prostate, testes, muscles, joints, soft tissues, chest, abdomen (liver, gallbladder, bile ducts, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and appendix).

Ultrasound-guided percutaneous biopsy of abdominal,
thyroid or breast masses or tumors; needle aspiration or drainage of abscess, cyst, pleural effusion, or ascites; and transrectal biopsy of the prostate are being performed with great precision and accuracy. The service is manned by well-trained and experienced radiologists who are leaders in their field, as well as qualified and competent ultrasonographers and other support staff.

For maximum benefit and accuracy, all examinations are carefully performed or personally supervised and checked by physician-radiologists.

No patient is allowed to leave the section without receiving a proper diagnosis or impression.

Advantages of Indications for Ultrasound

  • Does not involve the use of harmful ionizing radiation.
  • Displays in all planes, providing excellent anatomic detail and localization.
  • Differentiation between the solid and cystic nature of masses, critical in patient management, can be easily and reliably
    achieved.

Indications for Ultrasound :

  • Frequently performed in addition to radiology (x-ray)
  • Numerous organ systems can be examined for disease, and samples can be taken to help with the diagnosis and therapeutic plan.
  • Allows the doctor to evaluate a number of diseases such as infection, inflammation, or tumors.
  • Evaluating hollow organs allows for the immediate detection of stones, obstruction, or tumors.
